Sauna’s & Metabolism

Potential Benefits of Saunas on Metabolism

  • Caloric burn – as our body temperature increases, our heart rate will also rise and may reach levels similar to that of moderate exercise. This in turn may result in our bodies being able to burn more calories after a sauna
  • Insulin sensitivity – it is thought that regular sauna use may improve our glucose metabolism and reduce fating blood sugar levels
  • Detoxification – sweating in a sauna may facilitate the excretion of certain toxins, including pollutants and heavy metals that can impair our metabolic processes
  • Inflammation – it is thought that saunas may improve our circulation which in turn supports a healthier process of nutrients and oxygen circulating our bodies keeping us healthy

How often should you have a sauna to have a impact on metabolism

2-4 session a week may provide the metabolic benefits without overtaxing the body. A session should be 10-15 minutes and over time increase to 20-30 minutes if you can tolerate it!

Saunas post a work out aim to enhance recovery and maximise fat oxidation

Saunas in the evening, aim to promote relaxation and better sleep – both of which indirectly benefit our metabolism.

Considerations to be aware of

Whilst saunas are considered healthy for most, it is import to pay attention to:

  • Dehydration & Electrolyte imbalance – extended or frequent sauna use can cause significant fluid loss impairing key body functions. In addition, excessive sweating may lead to the loss of key electrolytes. ALWAYS hydrate BEORE and AFTER a sauna by drinking water and consider using some electrolytes to help rebalance
  • Overheating – prolonged sessions can lead to dizziness and heat exhaustion so always pay attention to your body and if you begin to feel unwell STOP the sauna
  • Existing health conditions – anyone with cardiovascular diseases (including hypertension) or anyone who is pregnant should always consult a medical practitioner before using a sauna
