Why Kidney Health Matters

Your kidneys filter waste, regulate fluids and electrolytes, control blood pressure and activate Vitamin D for bone health. When kidney function declines many other systems are affected, often silently at first.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) can develop gradually and is strongly linked to blood pressure, blood sugar balance, inflammation and dietary patterns.

Foods that Support Kidney Health

  • Hydrating Foods – cucumbers, courgettes, watermelon and soups help maintain fluid balance
  • Plant-forward Meals – vegetables, legumes and whole foods reduce acid load on the kidneys
  • Healthy Fats – olive oil, avocado, nuts & seeds all support heart health which is closely linked with kidney health
  • Antioxidant-Rich Foods – berries help protect kidney tissue from oxidative stress

Foods to Be Mindful Of

Not all foods are harmful but quantity and frequency matter:

  • Highly processed foods (high sodium and additives)
  • Excessive salty snacks and takeaway meals
  • Sugary drinks and soft drinks
  • Very high protein intake without professional guidance

Salt, in particular increases blood pressure and is one of the biggest risk factors for kidney disease. When cooking at home try and replace salt with herbs and spices, garlic and lemon.

Hydration – how much is enough?

Hydration needs vary, but pale yellow urine is a helpful guide to aim for. Spread fluids throughout he day rather than consuming large amounts at once.

Healthy kidneys thrive on consistency. Balanced meals, adequate hydration, gentle movement and mindful salt intake are all important. Small daily habits such as these can help protect our kidneys for the long term
