Fibroids

Fibroids are one of the most common and yet understudied diseases in women. These tumours which are dependent on both oestrogen and progesterone levels, affect women mainly during their reproductive years. Most women who have fibroids, will be asymptomatic for many years, and approximately 30% – 40% of this group will present with severe symptoms including abnormal uterine bleeding. anaemia, pelvic pain and pressure, back pain. urinary frequency, constipation and even infertility.

There are various theories as to why causes the development of fibroids but common factors that may increase the risk of fibroid development include family history, race, low vitamin D, smoking, alcohol, obesity, oral contraceptive pill, consuming processed meats.

Medical treatments vary and are often guided by a woman’s age and desire to ‘preserve fertility’.
