Electrolytes in Summer

Jul 3, 2026

If you find the summer heat is causing you to feel fatigue, lightheaded or even sluggish then maybe electrolytes might the missing piece in your summer hydration routine.

What are Electrolytes

Electrolytes are minerals that carry an electrical charge and help regulate hydration, nerve function, muscle contraction and blood pressure. Key electrolytes include sodium, potassium, magnesium and calcium.

Why Electrolytes Matter More in Summer

During the warmer months we typically lose more fluids (and by default electrolytes), through sweating. Replacing with water alone is not always enough, especially if our losses are high.

Low electrolyte levels over a prolonged time may lead to feelings of fatigue, headaches, muscle cramps, dizziness and brain fog.

Are Electrolytes right for you?

Electrolytes may be particularly helpful for individuals who are very active or undertake regular exercise. In addition people who sweat heaving or are prone to low blood pressure or spend long hours outdoors may benefit from some electrolytes. Further if you are recovering from an illness such as diarrhoea or vomiting, electrolytes can play a useful role in your recovery.

What to look for in an Electrolyte Product

Not all electrolyte drinks provide the same health benefits. Look for those that contain a balance of sodium, potassium and magnesium; have minimal added sugar and are free from artificial colours or sweeteners.

In turn be cautious of those with high sugar content (this may worsen energy crashes) and artificial colourings.

A Note of Caution

Electrolytes are not necessarily for everyone. If you have kidney conditions, high blood pressure and take certain medications (including diuretics) then it is always important to seek personalised advice before supplementing.

Make your Own Electrolyte Drink

Make your own simple electrolyte drink by adding a pinch of sea salt to a glass of water, add a squeeze of fresh lemon and a splash of coconut water!

Electrolytes can be a powerful tool for hydration when used appropriately. Pay attention to your body and any symptoms you may have and use electrolytes strategically rather than tan routinely.
